About the event

MA|DE presents ‘ZZOO’ — PETERBOROUGH launch w/ special guests Hutchinson, Monaghan & Rubacha
Join us at Peterborough's Take Cover Books (59 Hunter St E) for the launch of the debut full-length collaborative poetry collection ZZOO by MA|DE (Mark Laliberte + Jade Wallace), published by Palimpsest Press! The evening will feature readings by Chris Hutchinson, MA|DE, Murgatroyd Monaghan & Elisha Rubacha.

ABOUT the BOOK:
--------------------------------
'ZZOO' is a bestiary for the modern world!

At a time when binaristic and hierarchical relations are being readily interrogated, MA|DE — a unity of two voices fused into a single, poetic third — takes up a critique of the human-animal divide in their full-length debut.

From the depths of the oceans to the outer reaches of the sky, a menagerie of species trade off time in the limelight, none of them solely occupying the central space on the global stage. MA|DE’s collaborative practice foregrounds interdependence, outward focus, shared spaces and non-hierarchical thinking, all of which emerge allegorically in interzonal poems that are as richly realized as they are formally eclectic. This wild-blooded collection turns conventional exhibitionism on its head, treating humans and animals as equal subjects of art, science and selfhood.

ABOUT the READERS:
--------------------------------

Chris Hutchinson is the author of four previous poetry books, as well as the autofictive verse-novel Jonas in Frames. He has lived all over North America—from Dawson City, Yukon, to Brooklyn, New York—working as a line cook and, more recently, teaching creative writing to undergraduates. He is now a permanent faculty member of the English Department at MacEwan University, located on Treaty 6 Territory.

MA|DE (est. 2018) is a collaborative writing entity, a unity of two voices fused into a single, poetic third. It is the name given to the joint authorship of Mark Laliberte and Jade Wallace — artists whose active solo practices, while differing radically, serve to complement one another. Their work has appeared in literary journals internationally, including Augur, CV2, Grain, PRISM, Salamander, The Woodward Review and Vallum. MA|DE has written 4 chapbooks, including the bpNichol award-shortlisted A Trip to the ZZOO (Collusion Books 2020). MA|DE's debut full-length poetry collection, ZZOO, is out now from Palimpsest Press, and another collection, Detourism, is forthcoming with Palimpsest in 2028. More: ma-de.ca

Murgatroyd Monaghan is an Autistic mother, poet, writer and spoken word artist of mixed descent. She has been a recipient of numerous national and international awards for her writing, and her collection, For Soldiers and Sailors Alike: Poems on the Familiar Wars of Womanhood, was published in 2022. When she is not writing, Murg can be found snuggling in bed with her three kids watching Star Trek.

Elisha May Rubacha lives and writes in Peterborough, ON. She was a finalist for Peterborough's Outstanding Emerging Artist Award (2018), and shortlisted for the PRISM International Creative Non-fiction Contest (2016). Her poetry chapbook “too much nothing” was published by Apt. 9 Press (2018), and her first stage play, "Waiting for Real Jobs" was produced during the Precarious Festival (2019). In 2022, Canada Council for the Arts funded her end-to-end hike of the Bruce Trail, and she is currently writing a multidisciplinary book of poetry about the journey. She is the founder, editor, and designer of bird, buried press, which has published over 25 chapbooks of fiction and poetry since 2016.
